Another weekend of fun-filled events in Flagstaff, AZ

This is the last weekend for the Museum of Northern Arizona’s special exhibit: Grand Archaeology: New Excavations along the Colorado River. The exhibit documents recent archaeological excavation and research in Grand Canyon National Park, conducted by MNA in partnership with Grand Canyon Association. The excavation that has been undertaken since 2005 and which will continue to 2011 highlights the first excavation work in the Grand Canyon in over a generation.

Friday night, Heritage Square goes with a traditional Flagstaff theme and brings a little different kind of pre-movie entertainment to the Square. The outdoor Movie of the Square will be October Sky – the true story of a coal miner’s sun who took up rocketry after seeing news of the first Sputnik. The movie will begin at dusk. Before that, join the Coconino Astronomical Society for a night sky observing session! Members of the society will point out the planet Saturn and its rings low in the west near the planet Mars, and Jupiter and its moons, low in the east. They also will observe other objects in the evening sky, such as the Moon and its craters and mountains; double stars, star clusters, and other wonders of the heavens. The Hubble Space Telescope may also be visible from 9:02 to 9:06 PM. (This event is weather permitting -- the Moon must be visible, with no threatening weather). Please remember to dress warmly. This event is sponsored jointly with the Heritage Square Trust. Lowell Observatory will also be participating in this event. This is the fourth Heritage Square observing session of the Coconino Astronomical Society in 2008. Sessions will continue this year on the following dates: August 8, September 5, and October 10. These are all Friday evenings near the time of the first quarter Moon.

Back by popular demand -- held over from last week's First Friday Artwalk -- are the East Side Ten. Sixteen different artists (10 of whom do not live in Flagstaff) intrepreted the phrase "Unamerican Activities" and most of the responses are not as clear cut as you might think. Are they “Un-American” or ultimately very “American”? That's up to the viewer to decide. So, where does the name "East Side Ten" come from? Find out Friday night, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 2029 N 1st St.

Also, Friday night (and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon) A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum – a “Town and Gown” production – continues at the Clifford White Theatre on the NAU Campus. For show details, times and tickets, click here. I plan to be there Saturday night!

If your in the Northwest Rural area of Flagstaff on Friday night, stop by the Bonito Campground amphitheater (north on Highway 89, adjacent to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument entrance) before 8 p.m. A park ranger will give a 45 minute presentation on the use and misuse of fire. See a beautiful slide show and engage in an informative discussion, sponsored by the National Park Service/United States Forest Service Interpretive Partnership Program.

There is always plenty to enjoy outdoors in Flagstaff during the summer days, including biking, hiking, and just taking a walk on the forest or urban trails. If you are looking for something a little more focused this Saturday, you could take an historic tour of downtown Flagstaff at 10:30 a.m. (Reservation required.) If you are a history buff, after the downtown historic tour in the morning, you can grab your own bag lunch and attend a presentation at the Riordan Mansion State Park, honoring the 100th anniversary of the Coconino County Hospital. The talk begins at 12:15 p.m.

Up Ft. Valley Road at the Coconino Center for the Arts, you can see Dine dye demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fourth generation Navajo weaving and natural dye expert Mark Deschinny will demonstrate traditional dyeing processes.

Start your Saturday early with a 7:30 a.m. birdwalk at The Arboreteum at Flagstaff, attend a Live Birds of Prey demonstration at noon or 2 p.m. at The Arboreteum, and while you are visiting The Arboretum, stop by the Penstemon Festival and Sale.

If you’re looking for a pet, there will be lots of animals looking for a new home at the Rescue Roundup at Foxglenn Park. Children's activites and other fun stuff, too. Click here for pictures and info about Foxglenn Park.

If you’re into politics, and want to help Democrats get elected, go to the Democratic Party Headquarters at 9:30 a.m. for a short training and then hit the streets for two hours of voter registration with a fun and enthusiastic group of local Democrats. If walking isn’t your thing, you can stay in the office at 4 S. San Francisco Street and sell Obama buttons and stickers while you register voters who stop by. Details on the event.

Enjoy the folk music of Jacqui Foreman at 2 p.m. Saturday in Heritage Square.

If you are a resident of Ponderosa Trails, enjoy the fun at the annual neighborhood picnic and movie. Details here.

After all this activity, you may want to kick back with a beer at Flagstaff’s 16th Annual Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival beginning at 3 p.m. at the Coconino County Fairgrounds. You must be over 21 to enter and entrance fee is pricey, so plan to drink more than one beer to make it worthwhile. On second thought, all proceeds benefit Sun Sounds of Arizona, so head on out and enjoy the other fun at the festival, even if you don’t drink beer.

You can stick around the Coconino County Fairgrounds area for Pine Mountain Amphitheater’s evening B.B. King concert. Wow!

Or head to Lowell Observatory for a special Saturday evening presentation at 7 PM. Lowell Observatory docent Howard Israel will give an indoor program, A Grand Tour of the Solar System. In addition to this presentation, numerous telescopes will be set up for viewing throughout the Lowell campus.

Sunday morning, remember the Flagstaff Community Market from 8 a.m. to noon on Phoenix Avenue in downtown Flagstaff. It’s a great gathering place as well as a great place to buy fresh food that has not traveled far to get to you.

Sunday afternoon, enjoy the music of The Cadillac Angels in Heritage Square in downtown Flagstaff.

Have a great, summer weekend in Flagstaff and remember to call us if you happen upon any real estate you’d like to buy. We’ve also been pretty darn successful at selling Flagstaff homes this year, so if you need to leave our lovely community, give us a call – we’ll help you make the move happen! Team Heitland at RE/MAX Peak Properties – helping buyers and sellers of Flagstaff real estate!
