Bring your jacket and rain hat to these Flagstaff weekend events

As always, there will be a lot to have fun with in Flagstaff this weekend. It looks like our summer monsoon weather has come on the early side, so wherever you go in the afternoon, take a jacket to keep off the rain showers. And the rest of the time, be sure you are wearing sunscreen!

Friday night, downtown Flagstaff will be busy with the usual summertime Movie on the Square at dusk. This week, the feature is The Bee Movie. Starting at 6 p.m., there will be belly dancing and musical entertainment by the Gypsy Chicks.

If you’d like to enjoy some great food on the way to Heritage Square, stop by the The 24th Annual Gran Fiesta Del Barrio & Fajita Cook-off at San Francisco de Asis School between Beaver and Humphrey’s on Cherry Ave. The Coordinating Council On Mexican American Affairs will present a score of entries in the cook off beginning at 5 p.m. Tejano music, folklorico dancers, kids games and the”best fajitas this side of the Pecos” The cook off begins Friday night, when admission is free, and continues from noon to midnight on Saturday when admission will be $5.00 per person ($15 per family / 65 yrs and older are free). Proceeds benefit Hispanic scholars and will be matched by Northern Arizona University. More info in the Arizona Daily Sun calendar report.

On Saturday, Runners and Walkers can benefit Northland Hospice in 5K and 10K runs and a kids walk. Central location for the events is Wheeler Park, across from Flagstaff City Hall.

For a less urban walk on Saturday, visit Griffth Springs with the United States Forest Service interpreters. The walk begins at 9 a.m. from the parking area two miles south of Fort Tuthill on Highway 89A Join USFS interpretive rangers Steve and Lois Hirst for a visit to one of Arizona's rare riparian areas. Participants can extend the two-mile forest loop into Griffith Canyon for a total of four miles. The Arizona Natural History Association is co-sponsoring this event. Difficulty: easy. Bring water (or it won't be so easy). For other USFS interpretative hikes this and in coming weeks, visit Coconino National Forest, Summer Interpretative Programs.

If you are interested in the natural flowers around Flagstaff, you won’t want to miss botanist Dr. Gwendolyn Waring’s two-hour tour through The Arboretum's 200 acres of woodlands, meadows, and cultivated gardens to learn about a large variety of wildflowers as they are in bloom over the course of the summer. The walk begins at 9:30. Included with price of admission to The Arboretum at Flagstaff.

Folk fans can bask in the music for two days this weekend in Flagstaff. Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Coconino Center for the Arts will host the 7th Annual Folk Festival, presented by Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music and Flagstaff Cultural Partners.
