Flagstaff’s cultural opportunities win accolades throughout the year

In April 2007, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine chose Flagstaff as one of the five best college towns for the “over forty” crowd to live, describing our city as <a title="Kiplinger's Personal Finance Article on Flagstaff" href="http://www.annheitland.com/bin/web/real_estate?acnt=AR49005&ZKEY=&action=ACTIVATE_FRAMES&tm=&linkout=http%3A%2F%2Fcontrol.cisdata.net%2Fbin%2Ffilelink.php%2FAR49005%2F6383b84239d2b5cfd8030068626ad4d2" target="_blank">“Old West, New Energy.”</a> In a December 23 article, Betsey Bruner, our local newspaper’s Art, Culture, and Community Editor, aptly compiled some of the talent and events in Flagstaff during 2007, which show that Flagstaff continues to earn the reputation as one of the best places to live in the country for anyone interested in arts and culture.If you have not seen Bruner’s <a title="Arizona Daily Sun - 2007 Arts and Culture in Review" href="http://www.azdailysun.com/articles/2007/12/23/news/arts_and_living/20071223_arts_and_living_1.txt" target="_blank">2007 in Review</a> article, take a look at it. The article highlights developments at the <a title="Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra" href="http://flagstaffsymphony.org/" target="_blank">Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra</a>, including a 22% increase in attendance for the first three concerts of 2007-2008 season. Bruner also discusses the Flagstaff events and news created by <a title="Flagstaff Cultural Partners" href="http://www.culturalpartners.org/partners.htm" target="_blank">Flagstaff Cultural Partners</a>, and great exhibits at the <a title="Museum of Northern Arizona" href="http://mna.org/" target="_blank">Museum of Northern Arizona</a>. Other notable highlights of 2007 Culture and Arts in Flagstaff:<ul><li>The <a title="NAU Theatre performs Cripple of Inishmaan" href="http://www4.nau.edu/insidenau/bumps/2007/11_7_07/theater.htm" target="_blank">Northern Arizona University Department of Theatre’s performance of The Cripple of Inishmaan</a> was one of only eight performances, out of over 200 entries, chosen to perform at a regional event in Los Angeles. Congratulations to NAU Theatre Professor, and my friend, Bob Yowell on this achievement.</li><li>The <a title="Northern Arizona Book Festival (in Flagstaff) website" href="http://www.nazbookfest.com/about.htm" target="_blank">Northern Arizona Book Festival</a> had another successful event in the Spring and hired a new Executive Director to guide it into its second decade.</li><li>The <a title="Canyon Movement Company" href="http://www.canyonmovementcompany.org/" target="_blank">Canyon Movement Company</a> presented its fourth annual “Nutcracker Suite in Modern Bare Feet” and is only one of many successful dance organizations in the Flagstaff area.</li><li>The <a title="Master Chorale of Flagstaff" href="http://www.masterchoraleflagstaff.org/index.htm" target="_blank">Master Chorale of Flagstaff</a> continued to raise over 100 voices on tour and in Flagstaff under the direction of Flagstaff’s gem <a title="Copley Bio" href="http://www.masterchoraleflagstaff.org/about_us/index.htm" target="_blank">Dr. Edie Copley</a>. </li><li><a title="Theatrikos" href="http://www.theatrikos.com/" target="_blank">Theatrikos Theatre Company</a> celebrated its 35th year of outstanding community theatre in Flagstaff. </li><li><a title="First Friday Art Walks in Flagstaff" href="http://www.theartistsgallery.net/first%20friday.htm" target="_blank">First Friday Art Walks</a> each month throughout the year celebrate and display our Flagstaff galleries and local and regional artists. </li><li><a title="Pine Mountain Amphitheater website" href="http://www.pinemountainamphitheater.com/" target="_blank">Pine Mountain Amphitheater</a> opened for outdoor entertainment in 2007 and future years.</li></ul>And remember, these are only the highlights, there is so much more to Flagstaff arts and culture!
