County will host 8th “Neighborhood Watch” meeting at Cromer Elementary School

Two Coconino County officials – Supervisor Deb Hill and Sheriff Bill Pribil have been hosting “Neighborhood Watch” programs in the Northeast Rural area of Flagstaff for the last seven months and will continue to do so, with the eighth meeting this Thursday evening, December 6, 2007. Neighborhood Watch is similar to the Block Watch program commonly conducted in urban areas, and is based on the concept of “neighbors looking out for neighbors.” It builds on the concept of “town watch” used in Colonial American, and was energized nationally in the 1960s.

Neighborhood Watch and Block Watch have been shown to be one of the most effective ways to prevent and deter criminal activity, attend to home and personal security, address the safety of our children and the elderly, and to alleviate fear and isolation. During meetings, residents learn how to observe and report suspicious activity and reduce the risk of becoming crime victims. By meeting regularly, residents learn to know their neighbors, which promotes neighborhood safety.

At this Doney Park meeting this Thursday evening:

• Supervisor Hill will provide refreshments!

• Supervisor Hill and County Sheriff’s Deputies will be available to answer questions

• Diedra Silbert of the Coconino County Juvenile Court Services Department will discuss the 40 Developmental Assets Program which establishes building blocks of healthy development to help young people grow up healthy, caring and responsible.

Further information on the meeting according to the County Press Release: “Meeting attendees will be asked to participate in focus groups that were established during the November meeting. The Doney Park Community Deputies will facilitate the groups with the intent of identifying potential solutions to neighborhood problems that were identified during the November meeting. Residents will be asked to recruit their neighbors to attend future meetings and to assist with establishing a phone tree for notification of future meetings and other significant events in the Doney Park area.”

Details:
6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 6
Cromer Elementary School
7150 N.
