The vast open space atop Switzer Canyon in central Flagstaff includes over 30 Acres of public land

The Flagstaff Parks & Recreation and Flagstaff Open Spaces Commissions have been working on a joint plan for the city-owned land on McMillan Mesa in central Flagstaff. These commissions are now ready to present their recommendations to the public.

There will be three opportunities for Flagstaff residents to learn the commissions’ plans this week.

Much of the open space on McMillan Mesa is private land, but there are over thirty acres owned by the City of Flagstaff. The private land was the subject of a public acquisition attempt several years ago, but the bond issue that would have supported the acquisition failed. Some of the land is under development now, and other private land will be developed as the years go by. The reason this central Flagstaff land has not developed so far is the cost of excavation on McMillan Mesa.

The questions to be addressed by the City of Flagstaff with respect to the land it owns are difficult. How much of the thirty acres should be kept as open, native space? (Some has already been used for urban trails.) How much should be used for recreation fields, which are in short supply even after recent improvements to Thorpe Park playing fields? Should space be allotted for a community garden? (This would be a great location with the dense housing surrounding the area.)

Here are the dates and times for the presentation of the conceptual plan proposed by the Open Spaces and Parks and Recreation Commissions. These are open houses. Stop by when you can.

Oct. 1, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm - Shepherd of the Hills Church, Benson Hall, 1601 N. San Francisco St.

Oct. 2, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm - Grace Fellowship Church, 520 N. Switzer Canyon Dr.

Oct. 4, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm - Killip Elementary School Library
