Memorial Day Weekend in Flagstaff

Zuni Festival, art events and special Lowell Observatory lecture highlight the weekend in Flagstaff
About the Zuni Festival in Flagstaff
Zuni Festival at MNA This Weekend!

Memorial Day weekend will be unusually rainy in Flagstaff, where scattered thunderstorms are forecast each day. The same weather today didn’t prevent me from having a hike in the Coconino National Forest without a drop of rain on my cap. The views of the San Francisco Peaks, surrounded by clouds, were gorgeous and the temperature was great – in the low ’70s. If you plan to venture out in the evenings this weekend in Flagstaff, be sure to have a jacket.

The opening summer Friday night “Movie on the Square” in downtown Flagstaff will be Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. If you plan to give it a try in spite of the weather forecast, arrive in downtown Flagstaff early, grab a seat outside at Heritage Square, and watch Ballet Folklorico D Colores perform the pre-movie event.

The pick for things to do in Flagstaff this weekend is the Zuni Heritage Festival at the Museum of Northern Arizona, which runs both Saturday and Sunday. Also both days downtown, you’ll find a fine arts and crafts fair in Wheeler Park (across from the Flagstaff City Hall). A good inside activity is to tour the Riordan Mansion. This is an Arizona State Park. Guided tours begin at 9 a.m. and the mansion is open until 5 p.m. Admission is six dollars for adults; $2.50 for youth (7-13), and six and under are free.

On Saturday night, you can enjoy the opening celebration for inFLUX: An Art Exhibition of Dance at the Coconino Center for the Arts. This event features performances from dozens of local dance companies, live music and good food to celebrate the opening of the new art exhibition. 6:00-9:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Sunday night at Lowell Observatory, you’ll find a special Memorial Starfest. Telescopes will be set for viewing around the Lowell campus. At 7 p.m., retired scientist Kent Colbath will give an indoor presentation, Dinosaurs, Plankton and Asteroids: the Science of Studying Mass Extinctions

Whatever you do this fine weekend, enjoy and drive safely in and around Flagstaff, or wherever you are!
