Ann's Picks for Fun Things to Do in Flagstaff This Weekend

There are always too many things to choose to do in Flagstaff -- this weekend bring your rain gear!

One of Flagstaff’s premier cultural events happens this weekend at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Saturday and Sunday, you can see and participate in the 59th Annual Navajo Festival of Arts and Culture. Over 50 Navajo artists, storytellers, and cultural interpreters will demonstrate Navajo culture including dance, rug weaving, jewelry making and plant usage. Learn how the Navajo culture teaches its people to live in harmony with Mother Earth.

Friday is First Friday Artwalk in downtown Flagstaff. And, also, the Friday night Movie on the Square at Heritage Square. The movie starts at sundown and at dusk there will be music on the square by Big Joe and The Pony Express. This week’s movie is Evan Almighty. All of this Friday night entertainment in downtown Flagstaff is free!

Saturday night, enjoy a very special celebration at the Coconino Center for the Arts as a group of string players from the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra perform in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the first Flagstaff dark skies ordinance. The City of Flagstaff adopted the world's first lighting ordinance on April 15, 1958. The ordinance banned advertising search lights that threatened to mar the night sky for professional astronomers. From this beginning, the International Dark Skies movement blossomed.  Tickets are $15 and $7.50 for children under 12. Tickets are available on line and may be picked up the night of the concert.

For those into fine arts and crafts, this is the weekend in Wheeler Park just west of downtown Flagstaff (across from City Hall). The show is open to all and free of charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Also this weekend in Flagstaff, a new play opens for an August run at Theatrikos Theatre Company: Six Degrees of Separation. Visit the website for show times and ticket prices.

Saturday, the Arizona Cardinals will be doing an outdoor practice beginning at 11:15 at Northern Arizona University. Team members will be available for autographs following the practice. Click here for more information about the Cardinals Training camp in Flagstaff.

Don’t forget to do your marketing at the Flagstaff Community Market on Sunday morning, from 8 a.m. to noon.
