Grandview Avenue in central Flagstaff will be blocked off for a Block Party from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday. There will be food, including snow cones, a bouncy house for the kids, music and voter information. Friends of Howard Shanker, Candidate for Arizona Congressional District 1, have organized this party to introduce Howard to Flagstaff residents in an informal, fun, atmosphere. The candidate is expected to speak about 1:30 p.m. Ten candidates are vying for the rural congressional seat being vacated by indicted three-term Republican Rep. Rick Renzi, and the wide-open spot is drawing national attention to this exciting election. According to Flagstaff's local paper, the Arizona Daily Sun: Changing the party that holds this District, where registered Democrats and Independents outnumber GOP voters nearly 2 to 1, should be easy in a year when Democrats are favored over Republicans nationally. Shanker is one of the candidates running in the Democratic primary race to compete in the general election this fall against whoever wins the Republican primary. The primary vote is September 2. Howard Shanker is a Georgetown-educated environmental lawyer who understands the complicated issues that face us in dealing with global warming, water allocation, and energy independence. Shanker has fought against uranium mining and high-density development near the Grand Canyon, has represented residents of CD-1 in water resource and other environmental litigation, and is endorsed by numerous tribal organizations as well as Congressman Raul Grijalva of southern Arizona. The Block Party begins at noon and is scheduled to end at 3 p.m. Location: 3405 N Grandview Dr. in Flagstaff (behind the Safeway on Cedar Ave.) For further details please contact Mattea Kramer, mattea@shanker2008.com, 928-607-0076. www.HowardShankerforCongress.com |
