Philadelphia Regional Bank President Confirms Fed Is In a Tight Spot

Inflationary pressures may make rescue from recession by further rate cuts impossible
Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser said this morning that the Fed is in a tough position regarding its monetary policy because the economy is slowing at the same time that inflation is rising. Mr. Plosser confirmed that additional cuts are a possibility in response to weakness in economic activity; however, if inflation pressures continue, further rate cuts are likely off the table.
