Incredible Creative Talent in Flagstaff

In April 2007, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine chose Flagstaff as one of the five best college towns for the “over forty” crowd to live, describing our city as “Old West, New Energy.” In a December 23 article, Betsey Bruner, our local newspaper’s Art, Culture, and Community Editor, aptly compiled some of the talent and events in Flagstaff during 2007, which show that Flagstaff continues to earn the reputation as one of the best places to live in the country for anyone interested in arts and culture.

The article highlights developments at the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, including a 22% increase in attendance for the first three concerts of 2007-2008 season. Other notable highlights of 2007 Culture and Arts in Flagstaff:

• The Northern Arizona University Department of Theatre’s performance of The Cripple of Inishmaan was one of only eight performances, out of over 200 entries, chosen to perform at a regional event in Los Angeles. Congratulations to NAU Theatre Professor, and my friend, Bob Yowell on this achievement.
• The Northern Arizona Book Festival had another successful event in the Spring and hired a new Executive Director to guide it into its second decade.
• The Canyon Movement Company presented its fourth annual “Nutcracker Suite in Modern Bare Feet” and is only one of many successful dance organizations in the Flagstaff area.
• The Master Chorale of Flagstaff continued to raise over 100 voices on tour and in Flagstaff under the direction of Flagstaff’s gem Dr. Edie Copley. 
• Theatrikos Theatre Company celebrated its 35th year of outstanding community theatre in Flagstaff. 
• First Friday Art Walks each month throughout the year celebrate and display our Flagstaff galleries and local and regional artists. 
• Pine Mountain Amphitheater opened for outdoor entertainment in 2007 and future years.
