One of the many great things about summer living in Flagstaff is the Flagstaff Community Market. It’s a fun way to spend a Sunday morning or Wednesday afternoon and you’ll end up with much fresher produce than you find at the supermarket.

The Flagstaff Community Market is open Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. through October 11th, City Hall West Parking Lot, west of 211 W Aspen Ave. The market will also be open on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. July 8th through September 9th, St. Pius Catholic Church parking lot, 2257 East Cedar Avenue.

Here are some notes from Nicole Woodman, Sustainability Manager at the City of Flagstaff about the benefits of shopping at the Flagstaff Community Market:

You can reduce the fossil fuel used for transporting your produce and increase the freshness of your food by patronizing Flagstaff’s local farmer’s market. When you go to the Flagstaff Community Market, you support independent growers and producers as well as the local economy. According to Local Harvest Inc., only 18 cents out of every dollar spent at a grocery store actually goes to the farmer who produced the crop.  Farmers markets allow for a greater percent of that money to go directly to the farmer.

On average, produce in the United States is shipped 1,500 miles before being sold. This does not include the produce imported from other countries!  Most of that produce is picked 4 to 7 days before being placed on supermarket shelves.

Thanks for the info, Nicole!
