If you are thinking of coming to Flagstaff to play in the snow this weekend, please be cautious! There are many fun things to do in Flagstaff in the winter. Some folks, however, get so excited when they see the beautiful snow in the mountains that they throw caution to the wind.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety reminds folks this weekend to not stop along the highways to play in the snow! There will be a “zero-tolerance” policy for parking alongside highways in and around Flagstaff and on other state highways. In fact, DPS has issued a special press release to remind motorists to be cautious. Incidentally, the press release provides some useful links to find where you can play in the snow.

The Flagstaff Visitor’s Bureau in downtown Flagstaff at the old railroad depot (also the current Amtrak station in Flagstaff) will provide info on snow play and other fun things to do in Flagstaff in winter. In fact, they have a compiled a 16-page guide to winter recreation in Flagstaff! Download the Flagstaff Winter Recreation Guide here.

All of that said, we’re a little crowded in Flagstaff this weekend because today was Northern Arizona University’s December graduation ceremony. In spite of the heavy snow, there is not yet enough accumulation for skiing at Arizona Snowbowl. The road to the Snowbowl off of Highway 180 will be closed on Sunday as preparations are made for opening day – yet to be announced.

Whatever you do this weekend, have a great time and be safe!
