From kite-flying to pulling weeds, your days can be filled with fun and the nights with entertainment in Flagstaff this weekend

The event of the weekend in Flagstaff is the Northern Arizona Book Festival, whose official poster is featured to the right. Events have already begun. The center of gravity for the festival is downtown Flagstaff’s Orpheum Theatre, but some events are at the Coconino Center for the Arts and others at Northern Arizona University. Read the full schedule for the book festival here.

Willie Nelson fans might argue with me about which is the “event of the weekend” because the man himself is appearing Friday night at Pine Mountain Amphitheatre. Actually, I might argue with myself about it….

If you have not seen it yet, get yourself to one of the hold over performances of Comedy of Errors. This Theatrikos interpretation of the Shakespearian comedy is just great!

The Bald Soprano & The Lesson also continue at the Clifford White Theater on the Northern Arizona University campus – Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the last performances. This is the last performance of the season for NAU Drama.

Sunday afternoon, plan to enjoy the Spring Festival of Choirs at NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium. Men’s Chorale, Women’s Chorale, University Singers and the Harold M. Harter Memorial Handbell Choir will present an afternoon of great choral singing – and it’s free. 3:00 p.m.

There are several outdoor activities scheduled this weekend, too. The Arboretum of Flagstaff offers free admission on Saturday in celebration of Arbor Day. The Flagstaff Biking Organization will have its first “trail day” on Saturday morning – working on trail improvements off of Lake Mary Road.

The City of Flagstaff sponsors Soar into Spring Kite Festival at Foxglenn Park on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. – admission is free; an all day pass for special activities is $5.00. There should be plenty of wind for that event!

Down in Kachina Village on Saturday, you can learn to identify invasive plant species and help clean up a valuable and beautiful piece of open space. NAU biologist Scott Harger will lead participants through the Pump House Greenway and Wash.  Bring work gloves and wear sunscreen for a morning of fun, starting at 9 a.m. The event will end around 11 a.m. with a light lunch provided by sponsors Friends of Flagstaff’s Future, Coconino County Parks and Recreation, Coconino Parks and Open Space, Friends of Coconino Parks.

Whatever you do in Flagstaff this weekend -- have fun and be safe!
