Don’t miss out on some great Flagstaff weekend fun by waiting until the last minute to make arrangements for these Flagstaff events coming up this weekend.
Time is running out to purchase tickets for A Night at the Oscars – one of Flagstaff’s annual parties. You don’t have to be a movie buff or even an Oscars- watcher to enjoy this event . The fun kicks off with your own red carpet entrance next Sunday, February 22, at 5:00 pm at the Coconino Center for the Arts. By the way, this event is a fundraiser for Theatrikos Theatre Company. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. You can purchase tickets online through Flagstaff Cultural Partners. The televised broadcast of the Oscar awards ceremony will be shown on a big screen, as patrons enjoy hors d'oeuvres and drinks—including the famous (or infamous) signature drink, Theatri-Kosmo.
Dress is Flagstaff-Whatever-Goes: Come dressed and fabulous or dressed in fleece; you’ll have a great time either way.
The red carpet will lead you to the main event to watch the Oscars, vote for your favorite actors and films, bid at a Silent Auction, and play Hollywood trivia and games. Watch out for paparazzi, thanks to photographers Jeff Saville and Michael Bielecki, as well as their downtown Flagstaff photography friends.
To really gear up the excitement, there will be auction items include a three-night-stay in Lake Tahoe, a Salt River rafting trip, gowns from Red Thread Sewing, gift certificates to many of your favorite Flagstaff restaurants and shops, and artwork by a host of Flagstaff’s most talented artists.
And, for the raffle: a terrific Los Angeles getaway package: 4 roundtrip tickets on Horizon Air, 4 passes to Disneyland, and 2 nights at an area hotel. Tickets are $10 each or 5 for $40. You can buy raffle tickets at the Doris Harper White Community Playhouse in downtown Flagstaff, or buy them at Oscar Night. The winner will be drawn at the event and you don’t have to be present to win.

The other weekend event for which I recommend advance ticket purchase is Friday’s Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra’s performance. Acclaimed pianist Alexander Kobrin is this week’s Flagstaff visiting artist. He’ll perform under the direction of this year’s new Flagstaff Symphony Music Director and Conductor, Elizabeth Schulze.
Kobrin will be performing Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. A contemporary Russian pianist, Mr. Kobrin has been studying piano since the age of five. He was born in Moscow in 1980 and graduated from the Moscow Conservatory at age 23. In 2005, Kobrin received the prestigious Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Kobrin’s playing has won praise throughout the world, and we in Flagstaff have a unique and wonderful opportunity to hear this much-loved Russian work performed by this talented Russian pianist.
Friday evening’s Flagstaff Symphony program also includes Festive Overture, Op. 96, a work by Dmitri Shostakovich, and Symphony #6 in D Major, Op. 60, by Antonin Dvorak. This is an evening of wonderful music not to be missed! The symphony starts promptly at 7:30 pm this Friday, February 20th, at Ardrey Auditorium on the NAU campus. For tickets, visit the FSO website at http://www.flagstaffsymphony.org, or call 523-5661 or toll-free at 888-520-7214. Tickets range from $28-$43. |
