A new and exciting exhibit opens Friday night at the Coconino Center for the Arts: Otra Voz. The exhibit features artists of Flagstaff’s Latino population, which has so greatly shaped the culture of the American Southwest. Featured painters are Alfred Quiroz, Claudio Dicochea, Adriana Garcia, and Daniel Martin Diaz. Featured video artist is Adam Cooper-Teran. Featured sculptor: Hector Ruiz. Many others are included in the exhibit. The opening reception is Friday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The weather is forecast to be wonderful this weekend, so it may be a good time for a drive to The Grand Canyon. Cartographers have attempted to map the complex features of the Grand Canyon for more than 150 years. Over time their equipment and techniques have changed dramatically, enabling them to capture fine details and diverse information. Kolb Studios is in the midst of a several months’ long exhibit of historic maps. Taking this trip may be my birthday present next month – hope the weather is good then! A special treat awaits the kids at the Coconino Center for the Arts on Sunday with this month’s Sunday Series of Musical Storytelling presented by the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and the Flagstaff Public Library. This month features poems and tales by Gabriel García Márques, Jose Marti, Pablo Neruda and others --- in Spanish and English. The program begins at 4 p.m. Download the Stories to Life brochure here. With the clear weather, it will be a perfect weekend to visit Lowell Observatory for some winter sky viewing. Night time hours begin at 5:30 p.m. At your leisure, you can explore the Discover the Universe exhibit hall. The multimedia shows Sky Tonight and Heavy Astronomy repeat throughout the evening in the Giclas Lecture Hall. Telescope viewing commences as soon as it is dark enough. Follow the traffic signs if you plan to come to Flagstaff for snowplay. Download the complete guide from the U.S. Forest Service using the link below. Have a great weekend! |
