Rural Areas Take Worst Hit in Rising Gas Prices

What Does This Mean To You and Real Estate?

It should come as no surprise that those who must drive the greatest distances for work and to buy food are suffering the most as gas prices rise. One of the first things I heard on KNAU, our local NPR station, this morning is that our neighbors in New Mexico are using the highest percentage of their incomes to pay for gas compared with anyone in the U.S.

What does this have to do with Flagstaff real estate?

If you pay more for a home that is near your work, or near a Mountain Line stop, you will pay less for gasoline than if you are commuting from Winslow, or Williams, or even Kachina Village or Bellemont. The voters of Flagstaff just voted to improve and expand the bus line service in Flagstaff. Take advantage of it. Get rid of your second car (and car payment) and take the bus.

Your mortgage lender, in qualifying you for your home loan, will take into account your transportation expenses and the lack of a second car payment. If you adjust your transportation costs, you may qualify for a better home in a more desirable location, and you’ll be helping to save the planet too!

Here is a podcast about driving to save gas: Hypermilers: Squeezing Out Every Mile Per Gallon.
