As always, the weekend in Flagstaff offers a lot to do, including the last weekend of the annual February collection of events known as Flagstaff Winterfest and all the snow play, skiing, and snow boarding activities that will be enhanced by this week’s fresh snowfall in Flagstaff. Here are some of the highlights: Friday night will be a busy one for musical performances. At Coconino Center for the Arts, the Grand Canyon Guitar Society and Flagstaff Cultural Partners bring Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang to Flagstaff for her Arizona debut. Ms. Yang is the first Chinese guitarist to record for a major recording studio. Here is a link to her full biography and performance background. Also on Friday night, at Prochnow Auditorium on the Northern Arizona University campus, you can experience music arising from the traditional culture of South Africa with LadySmith Black Mambazo. Tickets available from Greenhouse Productions. Friday night, jazz fans can see trumpeter Randy Brecker, who will be in Flagstaff for the 2008 NAU Jazz Festival – a weekend long event for middle school, high school, and junior college bands. Performances by the school bands are free and open to the public at Ardrey Auditorium throughout the days, Friday-Saturday. Mr. Bracker’s concert, Friday night at with tickets available through NAU’s Central Ticket Office in advance for $18 or $20 at the door. Saturday morning, you can choose to meet and question the candidates for the Flagstaff City Elections, or learn about bald eagles with Arizona Game and Fish. If you choose the Annual Bald Eagle Workshop, call 774-5045 to register no later than 4 p.m. on Friday. If you choose to learn about the City Council candidates, turn up at the Federated Church at 9 a.m., or for the Mayoral Candidates, show up at 11 a.m. The Second Annual Tournées Film Festival brings contemporary French films to Flagstaff on Saturday and Sunday. Different films will be exhibited free at Cline Library at 3 pm, 5 pm and 7 pm on Saturday and 1 pm and 3 pm on Sunday. Click here for details and a list and description of the films. For an unusual Saturday night, stop by Willow Bend Environmental Education Center to see and learn about owls. High Country Raptors will bring live owls for audience members to view up-close! Location: 703 Saw Mill Road. Suggested donation: $5.00. Sunday afternoon, Ardrey Auditorium will again host performances by NAU’s Shrine of the Ages Choir, the Harold M.
